I love films (true cinema) almost as much as I love books. I’ve long since said I can cop to 2 all-time favorite movies, after that I can’t pick a favorite. Granted this challenge doesn’t say your 3 FAVORITE films. I could do 3 comedies, 3 thought provoking.. if you’ve seen all the sub-genres on Netflix, you can see how out of hand this can become.
So, what I’ll do today is include my 2 all-time favorite movies and then the first movie I ever saw in theaters (for humorous purposes.)
#1. The Godfather.
I can’t write anything about this film that hasn’t already been said. If you haven’t seen it, you’re an embarrassment – stop reading and go watch it NOW. Sorry, I’m not sorry. While I can also agree that Godfather 2 was arguably better, it’s the Godfather that stands out against any other film, any other genre over time. It’s the gold standard. It still stands the test of time. It still feels like you’re watching it for the first time. It still gives you chills. It still makes you hungry, angry, laugh, cry.
My favorite characters: Luca Brasi & Sonny Corleone
My favorite quote: He made him an offer he couldn’t refuse… Luca Brasi held a gun to his head ,and my father assured him that either his brains or his signature would be on the contract. Thats a true story.
It just sends shivers through me! I like scary things remember, I’m not secretly a psychopath.
#2. Grosse Point Blank.
A hit man goes home for his 10 year high school reunion. John Cusack – LOVE LOVE LOVE. Jeremy Piven as Ari Gold, before he was Ari Gold. Jeremy Piven was ON THE MAP way before Entourage (cough cough.) Dan Akroyd. Best of the 80s music. This movie taught me true humor is in intellectual, witty banter and sarcasm. Best lines ever are littered throughout this movie. Man, I love it.
- Sir, it’s out of my hands. The gods want you to go back home, and they want you to delete someone while you’re there.
- Uh-oh! Smells like a wedding! You’re breaking my heart down here, Blank! I can’t aim through the tears
- People say forgive and forget. Yeah, I don’t know. I say forget about forgiving and just accept. And get the hell out of town.
- Ten Years (Jeremy Piven… best laugh)
Oh hell, I’m not even sorry.. here is some of the best dialogue.
Mr. Newberry: I visualised you in a haze as one of those slackster, flannel-wearing, coffee-house misanthropes I’ve been seeing in Newsweek.
Martin: No, no, no, I went the other road. Six figures, doing business with lead-pipe cruelty, mercenary sensibility. You know… sport sex, no real relationships. How about you, how have the years been treating you?
Mr. Newberry: Well, you know me, Martin; still the same old sell-out, exploiting the oppressed…
Martin: Debi’s house
Paul: Kinda crept up on you, didn’t it?
Martin: No, you drove us here.
Dr. Oatman: Go see some old friends. Drink some punch, visit with what’s-her-name. Don’t kill anybody for a few days; see what it feels like.
Martin Blank: I’ll give it a shot.
Dr. Oatman: No, don’t give it a shot! Don’t shoot anything!
Martin: Did you go to yours (1o year HS reunion)
Marcella: Yes, I did. It was just as if everybody had swelled.
#3 – My first movie in the theater….. The Lion King
An epic first movie selection I must say. I’m very proud of this The Lion King was followed by The Swan Princess, The Santa Clause, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
And with that, I am off to bed! Goodnight
What are you favorite movies of all time? What was the first movie you saw in theaters?
