10 Day – You – Challenge: Day 8 – 2 Songs

Happy  Monday! I took the weekend off from blogging, but am back again :)

10 day challenge

Today’s challenge is 2 Songs. I decided I wanted to do something a little unorthodox so I’m going to choose 2 songs I’m embarrassed to admit that I really enjoy.. years later, I still jam out to them.

Here we go!

#2. Yoko Ono – O’oh

Yoko Ono albums are also the album I’d be most embarrassed to say I own and enjoy. The secret is out!

#1. The Offspring – Come Out and Play

I really don’t know what to say hahaha. We had this place nearby to where I grew up called Roller Kingdom where you could roller skate or roller blade indoors, but they also had this stage where you could do karaoke and/or dance. The local schools had a few Friday Night roller skating events there every year and my dad used to take my little sister and I there on Sundays. They always, always, always played The Offspring and I just would go wild, rollerblading faster or with more gusto, dancing like a wild child.

But, anywho! What are 2 songs YOU’RE embarrassed about? I’d LOVE to know and not feel so awkward right now ;)

10 Day – You – Challenge: Day 7 – 3 Films

10 day challenge

I love films (true cinema) almost as much as I love books. I’ve long since said I can cop to 2 all-time favorite movies, after that I can’t pick a favorite. Granted this challenge doesn’t say your 3 FAVORITE films. I could do 3 comedies, 3 thought provoking.. if you’ve seen all the sub-genres on Netflix, you can see how out of hand this can become.

So, what I’ll do today is include my 2 all-time favorite movies and then the first movie I ever saw in theaters (for humorous purposes.)

#1. The Godfather.

I can’t write anything about this film that hasn’t already been said. If you haven’t seen it, you’re an embarrassment – stop reading and go watch it NOW. Sorry, I’m not sorry. While I can also agree that Godfather 2 was arguably better, it’s the Godfather that stands out against any other film, any other genre over time. It’s the gold standard. It still stands the test of time. It still feels like you’re watching it for the first time. It still gives you chills. It still makes you hungry, angry, laugh, cry.

My favorite characters: Luca Brasi & Sonny Corleone

My favorite quote: He made him an offer he couldn’t refuse… Luca Brasi held a gun to his head ,and my father assured him that either his brains or his signature would be on the contract. Thats a true story.

It just sends shivers through me! I like scary things remember, I’m not secretly a psychopath.

#2. Grosse Point Blank.

A hit man goes home for his 10 year high school reunion. John Cusack – LOVE LOVE LOVE. Jeremy Piven as Ari Gold, before he was Ari Gold. Jeremy Piven was ON THE MAP way before Entourage (cough cough.) Dan Akroyd. Best of the 80s music. This movie taught me true humor is in intellectual, witty banter and sarcasm. Best lines ever are littered throughout this movie. Man, I love it.

Favorite quotes:

  • Sir, it’s out of my hands. The gods want you to go back home, and they want you to delete someone while you’re there.
  • Uh-oh! Smells like a wedding! You’re breaking my heart down here, Blank! I can’t aim through the tears
  • People say forgive and forget. Yeah, I don’t know. I say forget about forgiving and just accept. And get the hell out of town.
  • Ten Years (Jeremy Piven… best laugh)

Oh hell, I’m not even sorry.. here is some of the best dialogue.

Mr. Newberry: I visualised you in a haze as one of those slackster, flannel-wearing, coffee-house misanthropes I’ve been seeing in Newsweek.

Martin: No, no, no, I went the other road. Six figures, doing business with lead-pipe cruelty, mercenary sensibility. You know… sport sex, no real relationships. How about you, how have the years been treating you?

Mr. Newberry: Well, you know me, Martin; still the same old sell-out, exploiting the oppressed…

Martin: Debi’s house

Paul: Kinda crept up on you, didn’t it?

Martin: No, you drove us here.

Dr. Oatman: Go see some old friends. Drink some punch, visit with what’s-her-name. Don’t kill anybody for a few days; see what it feels like.

Martin Blank: I’ll give it a shot.

Dr. Oatman: No, don’t give it a shot! Don’t shoot anything!

Martin: Did you go to yours (1o year HS reunion)

Marcella: Yes, I did. It was just as if everybody had swelled.

#3 – My first movie in the theater….. The Lion King

An epic first movie selection I must say. I’m very proud of this ;) The Lion King was followed by The Swan Princess, The Santa Clause, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

And with that, I am off to bed! Goodnight :)

What are you favorite movies of all time? What was the first movie you saw in theaters?

10 Day – You – Challenge: Day 5 – 4 Books

Hola! As you can probably imagine, this was a challenge. I read so many books and love 99% of every book I read (I’m quite picky to begin with) and I feel guilty to turn my back on many. I’m someone who also has favorite books for a mood I’m in, the time of year, by genre, etc.

So, to ease my conscience a bit, I selected 4 of my favorite book categories and chose 4 books for each of those :)

10 Day – You – Challenge: Day 6 – 5 Foods

Oh boy! 5 Foods everyone.. I found this to be a little vague actually. Foods, food types or meals? Or are all of the above eligible? I’m kind of just rolling with this one.. I know, I know It’s just supposed to be a fun little survey/challenge it’s not that serious. But, this is where my Monica Gellar alter-ego emerges :)

10 day challenge

1. PIZZA. I could literally eat pizza every. single. day. for the rest of my life. All kinds of pizza: thin crust, deep dish, flatbread, english muffin, frozen pizza, bagel bites ;) (90s kids!), dessert pizza, any topping.. I also equally enjoy COLD pizza. Breakfast all throughout college baby (and even sometimes now!) — Only thing I don’t like is white sauce pizzas.

I am known for secretly ordering pizzas and hiding the boxes from Xavier. Recently discovered the Whole Foods whole wheat crust, organic pizzas – super, surprisingly delicious. I was also raised on Elio’s and Freschetta, but I haven’t had them in a number of years. I don’t discriminate against Pizza.. ((Maybe this should have been one of my 10 secrets?!?!))

2. Spanish food. Another area where I’m not picky but two shout outs: Pastels (empanada) and regular rice and beans.

3. FRUIT! Particularly bananas, raspberries and cherries.

4. Italian food. Makes sense; I’m Italian and grew up on the best of the best homemade Italian dishes. I’m not so bad myself I’m not afraid to say! Shout outs: Lasagna & meatballs.

5. Tuna Noodle Casserole (with the crumb topping!) I haven’t actually had this in at least 10-12 years, but my entire life when asked about my favorite food I’d always say, “Tuna noodle casserole and anything Italian.” So, I felt like it’d be wrong not to include it.

Honorable Mentions (because I can’t help myself):

- Pickles

- Cereal (cheerios, corn flakes, grapenuts — I bet this surprises you)

- Greek yogurt

- Pretzels

- Salmon (seriously. seriously. love salmon and it was tough to not include in the 5)

What foods can you not live without? What were your favorites as a kid?

P.S. Favorite unhealthy snacks as a kid – Dunkaroos, Cool Ranch Doritos :)

10 Day – You – Challenge: Day 5 – 6 Places You Want To Go

Ok.. This is the toughest day on this challenge. At least once a day I talk about a place I want to go. I’m studying international business, I want to move around A LOT, I want to live EVERYWHERE. I have multiple lists for travel experiences (domestic, international, by continent, types of travel trips: big cities, natural wonders, specific sight..) SO you must take this list with a grain of salt.

10 day challenge

These are 6 MUST go to or I will not die a happy human. (P.S. Seattle would have been number one, but I can now officially cross that off :) )

1. Sweden

2. Italy

3. Turkey

4. Australia

5. Iceland

6. Norway

Now I kept it broad because there are a number of cities and natural sights I want to see in each of those places ;)

Oh boy.. I feel so conflicted even leaving it at that! Gah! I need to sign off before I make any more changes.

10 Day – You – Challenge: Day 4 – 7 Wants

Good Morning! If you’re in New England you know that it’s a beautiful day outside!

I woke up at 8am to have a quick chat with Sofia (she’s in China for 2 months – we have to communicate at odd times when we can!) Then I went back to sleep until 11:00a. I have a lot on my to-do list today, but I want to just run around outside for hours too..

I want to take advantage of my motivation to continue on my to-do list because I know I’ll always want to be outside on a nice day. GROWN UP CHOICES!

Moving right along, today’s part of the 10 Day Challenge is 7 Wants. This was tough because, as a human, we always have a bunch of wants. From little things, to big goals, to experiences, to material items.. Today I compiled 7 wants that I have almost always wanted and think about constantly. (Not in any particular order)

10 day challenge

1. To finish school. This one depresses me. I can and am finishing, but it just feels so complicated all of the time managing the timing/working full time/paying for it while paying my loans.

2. Travel Europe before I’m 30 (I know age doesn’t matter, but it’s just something I always imagined doing in my 20s.) I don’t mean just one country either, but really traveling Europe.

3. Live abroad. I’m studying international business and I really want to live in another country for a period of time; I’m not super picky about where this would be. There are a few places I definitely DON’T want to live, but many many many that I would.

4. Live in another major US city. Easier to achieve, but it’s hard to really plan on leaving friends and family behind.

5. Get in great shape ;)

6. Go on vacation with a friend!!! I’ve gone on vacation with a friend before, but I want to go on vacation now that I feel like more of an adult. I can appreciate the experience and the places more in the moment.

7. Write a book. :)

What do you want more than anything for yourself? What do you want to see?

10 Day – You – Challenge: Day 3 – 8 Fears

Today’s part of the 10 Day You Challenge is 8 Fears – eek! I must say this was a tad harder because it turns out I have a fear of putting my fears onto the internet and someone one day using it against me (cough**government**cough)

10 day challenge

But, here we go!

1. I’m afraid of a zombie apocalypse happening.. and not being prepared!! (meeting points, plans of action, knowing how to fish, knowing how to hunt, some other basic skills, etc.)

2. Government control::.. Robots, microchipping, EVERYTHING electronic so it can just be wiped out/changed..

3. Fear of falling from a very tall height. I have a lot of dreams where I wake up feeling like I’m falling off the bed/couch, etc and while I’m not specifically afraid of heights, I am afraid of falling off a mountain (Season 3 Game of Thrones.. Wildlings & Jon Snow scaling the wall!)

4. Shark attack. I LOVE THE OCEAN! But, I do get nervous about the vastness and depth and not being able to see everything.. particularly the possibility of a shark. Especially when the last few summers there was an insane amount of shark sightings off the Cape — Jaws?!!?

5. Books & Bookstores becoming obsolete, all paper being replaced with technology. Even being able to physically write things down.. I learn and memorize better when I physically write vs type and worry about it all disappearing.

6. Never doing or accomplishing major goals or bucket list items. I guess having certain regrets.

7. Being kidnapped and held hostage. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Silence of the Lambs. #EnoughSaid

8. Losing people in my life; really them dying. I understand death and the reality of it. But, it’s never okay, it’s never easy and I really fear losing all of the people I care about.

Wow. That was personal and insightful ;) I really span the spectrum of fears I’d say. Your turn!!

10 Day – You – Challenge: Day 2 – 9 Loves

Back again for the next day of the 10 Day You Challenge with Nine Loves!

10 day challenge

*****I purposely excluded my family, friends and Xavier because I feel like that is just fact and needs no mention. There’s no order, they’re beyond love, they’re my purpose, support & joy.

With that in mind, here are Nine Loves/Obsessions/Irrational affinities ;)

  1. Books! I’ll need to write a post to go more in depth about all of my thoughts and feelings around books. But, I was at Barnes and Noble last night and texted Xavier about how I was getting really upset thinking about the day when books/bookstores might be no more and how amazing the scent of books was just then. I’m such a nerd but I am who I am!
  2. Coffee. I’ve written/deleted/rewritten/deleted a number of things just now I want to say about coffee. There are no right words, all of the examples I want to mention still don’t do it justice. I want to write a book about my relationship with coffee. Heavy sigh..
  3. The #23. If you know me, you understand.
  4. Cheese. I mean seriously. A good cheese with wine, a good cheese and cracker combo, cheese on it’s own, on my burger, on my salad, with honey and fruit.. ON PIZZA! I want to live in a house of cheese like Monica.. (See past post for my love of cheese’s full due)
  5. Walking around big cities (irrational love for Seattle <333 )
  6. The Ocean; seeing it, breathing it in, swimming in it, being caught up in a wave, walking along it.

7. Music. Music has been my guide, my support, my best friend, my life saver at all different points of my life.

8. Dancing! I love just dancing it out, formally dancing: swing, salsa, ballet. I did ballet for more than half of my life and it was when I first understood what passion and being passionate felt like.

bri and me dancingNY dancing

9. Flying & Roller Coasters. I know those are technically 2 things, but they serve the same purpose. Those are how I get my “highs” in life. It’s thrilling, intoxicating and so much fun to fly and to ride a roller coaster. They’re the closest I’ve ever felt to toeing the line of living/dying hahaha. Fun fact: I went on a road trip and another vacation to ride some of the top roller coasters in the US!

What are YOUR Nine Loves? Anyone share any of my affinities?

10 Day – You – Challenge: Day 1 – 10 Secrets

Hi there! I saw this challenge/survey thing floating around and I love things like this, so I figured I’d give it a whirl :)

10 day challenge

10 Secrets::::…

  1. There have been times when I think it would be enjoyable to be an old recluse. I imagine just being surrounded by stacks and stacks of books, drinking from old Attingham teacups.
  2. I can be very outgoing and open (people will never believe this!!), but I think I’m actually an introvert. See this article, #’s 1-10, 14-16, 18, 20 , 21, 23 (hope to be 22)
  3. I always want to have someone with me when I go to explore, vacation, try something new. But, once I’m there I try and steal some alone time or get really quiet and would like to discover it on my own for the first time.
  4. I’ve had crushes on cartoon characters (Wolverine, Skeeter from Doug)
  5. When the powers at be were creating the NEW 7 Wonders of the World, they asked people to vote online.. I spent a lot of time narrowing them down, thinking them through and voted…….
  6. I cry borderline regularly at TV shows/movies/songs, most often at episodes of Grey’s Anatomy
  7. I get extremely nervous making phone calls to anyone that’s not a friend/family member; think making appointments, booking things, talking to vendors ((This the main reason I love how so many things are available to do online and I let everything go to voicemail))
  8. In the same vein, I’ve never returned anything because of this same anxiety
    1. Yesterday I went to get a car wash, paid 15 dollars and the car wash never came on.. I had to follow these lights and it said the car wash was going and it never did, I went forward and reverse through the thing twice to try to re-activate it, nothing happened.. I drove away and went to another one manned by real people. Out the $15.
  9. I steal my boyfriend’s socks and razors – the sock thing is not exclusive J
  10. I 100% believe in the supernatural – not EVERYTHING is such, but it is out there & I have experienced it.

This was actually pretty hard.. I’m pretty open about a lot of things most people might keep secret LOL and quiet about random, weirdo things (obviously.) It really got me thinking and reflecting though I must say!

Let me know some of your secrets and if you decide to participate in the challenge!

Thanksgiving Weekend

I hope you all had a safe and fun Thanksgiving! I made a pumpkin pie on Pie Making Day while watching all of the Thanksgiving episodes of Friends. (I must admit I’m kind of annoyed that they run these on TV now over Thanksgiving when this was a tradition I started 10 years ago)

Tonight I am working on packing/cleaning/organizing for the move while watching christmas/holiday episodes of Friends.

I love the season 2 episode when Phoebe goes to see her dad and when Chandler and Joey get in the cab and Phoebe hands them her “cheat sheet” – Brake left, gas right hahaha!

In non-Friends related news:

Xavier and I did go out on Black Friday, but not until 11am and we went to IKEA (not your typical Black Friday magnet for madness.) We officially purchased our sofa!! Tomorrow we get to start moving into our new spot :)

My friend Cristina had her baby last night and I was able to visit them in the hospital today! It’s really been the year of babies!

With respect to Thanksgiving – Some things that I’m grateful for this year:

- Starting my current job in April

- Our new apartment

- My closest friends

- Experiencing Barre classes and Pilates

- Costume parties!! < Random, but, I love dressing up and being creative with it! I had the opportunity to dress up 4 times in the past month between Halloween, a themed birthday and another themed party

- All things holiday! Holiday music, holiday lights. I’m really feeling the spirit this year and it’s helped ease my stress! This picture is of the trees on Comm Ave in Back Bay being strung with Christmas lights :)

PicMonkey Collage

- Pinterest. < Pinterest has been a lifesaver in planning and organizing for our new apartment!

- Xavier – This has been an awesome year for the both of us and I just really appreciate him tremendously and thought he deserved a shout out.
